The strength of any successful company lies in its people, and Swank Construction has some of the best. They took a moment for a photo in front of The Veldhurst, at 46 Rotterdam Way. IROQUOIS – For more than six decades, Swank Construction Ltd. has been helping families, businesses and communities across Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry build for the future.
The family-owned company traces its roots back to 1958, when Peter Swank and his friend Arie Geurkink founded G&S Construction. What began as a business specializing in agricultural and commercial buildings has grown into one of the region’s most respected construction companies, guided by three generations of the Swank family.
As the company evolved, so did its areas of expertise. In 1986, Peter’s sons, Ron and Henry Swank, expanded the business into residential construction. Over the years, Swank Construction completed a wide range of projects, including free-stall dairy barns equipped with robotic systems, poultry barns, machine sheds, office buildings, community centres and hundreds of custom homes.
Today, leadership has passed to the third generation, with Devin and Jesse Swank continuing the family tradition, following the death of their father, Ron Swank in 2025. They focus primarily on custom homes and light commercial construction, allowing the company to provide a highly personalized experience for clients navigating the homebuilding process.
At the heart of Swank Construction’s approach is a commitment to collaboration. Every project begins with a detailed consultation, where homeowners are encouraged to share their vision, priorities and budget goals. From there, the company’s in-house design team works closely with clients to create floor plans tailored to their lifestyle, needs and future plans.
Transparency remains a key part of the process. Detailed project proposals outline everything from building materials to finishes, ensuring clients have a clear understanding of what is included before construction begins.
Once plans are finalized and schedules are set, Swank Construction manages every stage of the build while keeping homeowners informed and involved. Clients are encouraged to visit the site throughout construction, providing an opportunity to see their new home take shape and remain connected to the process.
Just before move-in day, homeowners participate in a comprehensive walkthrough to review finishes, test systems and become familiar with the operation of their new home. The company’s commitment does not end when the keys are handed over, with ongoing warranty support and customer service available long after construction is complete.
That focus on quality construction and relationships has helped define Swank Construction’s reputation throughout Eastern Ontario. The company views each project not simply as a building, but as an opportunity to create lasting connections within the communities it serves. Both Jesse and Devin were greatly influenced by their father, and they submitted these comments to accompany our words.
“It’s been a year and a half of ups and downs, notably losing one of the most important pieces of the puzzle, our father Ron.
“This company and the work he did for our community were his life’s passion. We had an excellent teacher and mentor in him. From an early age he taught us that reputation is created not only through the quality of the homes we build, but by taking the time to build genuine relationships with everyone we work with. We plan to keep his memory and legacy alive by maintaining these values and the high standards that he set from the very beginning.
“We are incredibly thankful for the support we’ve received from our team, our subtrades, our homeowners, and the community. The past year and a half challenged us in ways we never could have expected, but it also reminded us how fortunate we are to be surrounded by people who genuinely care. While we’re proud of where we are today, we’ll never forget the encouragement, kindness, and support we received while finding our footing.”
Over the past 68 years, Swank Construction has built more than 600 homes and agricultural buildings while earning numerous industry awards. Despite its growth and success, the company’s mission remains rooted in the same values that guided its founders: quality craftsmanship, integrity and a commitment to helping local communities thrive.
As new families move into the region and long-time residents continue to invest in their communities, Swank Construction remains focused on creating places people are proud to call home. Ron, undoubtably would be proud to see Devin and Jesse ensuring these qualities exist in every home they build.
