EMBRUN – It is, according to Mayor Mike Tarnowsky, one of his favourite responsibilities as Mayor, that of recognizing the extraordinary efforts of local volunteers. At the Council meeting on Aug. 31, it was longtime volunteer Peggy Marchessault who was recognized by Russell Township for her contributions to the community.
Marchessault received a Community Award at the recent Township’s council meeting in recognition of her volunteer work, community involvement and efforts to bring residents together.
Her involvement in the community dates back to the years when her three sons were growing up. She volunteered as a team manager with both the Russell Minor Hockey Association and the Russell Soccer Club, taking on responsibilities that extended beyond organizing teams and schedules.
She also helped with fundraising, recruited volunteers and developed relationships with local businesses to support programs and activities for young athletes and their families.
Marchessault has continued to volunteer at community events over the years. Her activities have included working at the ticket booth during the Russell Fair, assisting with local concerts and special events, and supporting charitable initiatives throughout the township.
The township said Marchessault is known for taking the initiative when she sees a need and encouraging others to become involved.
Her organizational skills, reliability and willingness to help have made her a familiar presence at community events and initiatives throughout Russell Township. Known for her positive attitude, boundless energy, and willingness to help wherever needed, she consistently brings people together.
The Community Award is part of the township’s Citizen Recognition Program, which also includes certificates from the mayor for special anniversaries and events, and the Key to the Township for national or global ambassadors.
Residents can nominate individuals for recognition throughout the year by contacting the township’s communications department at comms@russell.ca.
Information about the Awards and Recognition Program is available on the township website.
