SOUTH GLENGARRY – With warmer temperatures and longer days just around the corner, another sure sign of spring has arrived: registration is now open for the 2026 Raisin River Canoe Race.

The Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) announced that online registration opened Feb. 23 for the popular annual event. Now in its 53rd year, the race is set to take place on April 11, following its traditional 30-kilometre route from St. Andrews West to Williamstown.

The race officially begins at 10:30 a.m. in the field beside St. Andrew’s Catholic School in St. Andrews West, where the first wave of paddlers will launch from the riverbank.

A longstanding spring tradition in eastern Ontario, the Raisin River Canoe Race draws paddlers of all ages and skill levels from across the region and beyond. Participants test their endurance and skill as they navigate the swift currents, rapids and chilly spring waters of the Raisin River.

RRCA Canoe Race Coordinator Lissa Deslandes says the event is about more than competition.

“It’s as much about the experience as it is about the competition,” Deslandes noted, adding that the route highlights the natural beauty of the Raisin River watershed while the spring melt creates exciting and ever-changing river conditions.

The race is also a favourite for spectators. Each year, hundreds gather along shorelines and bridges throughout South Glengarry to cheer on participants travelling by canoe, kayak and stand-up paddleboard.

Those wishing to take part must register online in advance at www.rrca.on.ca/CanoeRace. According to the RRCA, limited race-day registration may be available if space permits.

As winter gives way to spring, the annual race once again promises to bring the community together for one of the area’s most anticipated outdoor events.
