MORRISBURG – There was a strong turnout of dignitaries, stakeholders, and community members for the official opening of Morris Glen in the South Dundas village of Morrisburg on Wed., July 9.

Morris Glen is a newly constructed 17-unit residential building that includes five market-rate units and 12 rent-geared-to-income units, offering much-needed affordable housing in the community.

“This mix supports a diverse group of residents and ensures the development reflects the needs of the broader community” explained a joint press release from the United Counties of SDG and the City of Cornwall. It noted the housing unit contains “four barrier-free units, ensuring people with mobility challenges can live comfortably and independently” and is located near to grocery stores, medical service and other essential amenities.

Cornwall Housing Manager Lisa Smith introduced the dignitaries after mentioning how the residential apartment building is the result of a wonderful collaboration between individuals, businesses and municipal, regional and provincial government officials. She thanked those who had seen the project through, noting it is the commitment and tenacity of stakeholders working together which made this project happen.

The Ontario government, through the provincial Social Services Relief Fund, provided nearly $1.7 million dollars to the project, with the City of Cornwall serving as the service delivery administrator for United Counties and Cornwall.

During their comments at the ceremony, Minister Flack mentioned there is an increased need for affordable housing in the province, with MPP Quinn noting the opening of these apartments will be a location where residents will be able to make new memories. Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale thanked stakeholders and the provincial government for their collaboration in the project and described housing issues as “one of the great challenges” of today.

“The opening of Morris Glen marks a significant step forward in our commitment to housing solutions across SDG Counties. Projects like this demonstrate what’s possible when all levels of government work together to address a shared challenge.” commented SDG Warden Lang. In the same press release, South Dundas Mayor Broad said “Morris Glen is more than a building; it’s a reflection of our community’s values. We’ve worked hard to ensure this project meets the unique needs of Morrisburg and South Dundas.” As the ceremony began, North Dundas Mayor Tony Fraser mentioned how “It is vital that Cornwall and the Counties come together in builds like this” and continued how collaboration like this can lead to solutions on this important issue.

Following the opening ceremonies, those attending the event were able to tour the building with officials who were able to provide additional information on the amenities provided to residents who will soon live there. The building has 17 two-bedroom apartments which are 720 square feet in size, are energy efficient, with five barrier free units available to rent. There are on-site mailboxes in the secure access building, with elevators, stairs and a second-floor laundry room available for residents use.

“The opening of Morris Glen represents an important milestone in the region’s housing strategy. With housing pressures rising across Ontario, the City of Cornwall and SDG Counties are committed to collaborating on practical, people-centered solutions that expand access to affordable and accessible homes. While the need remains urgent, Morris Glen is a key step in a long-term effort to build a housing system that works for everyone.” concluded the press release.
