LONG SAULT – For many years the Township of South Stormont has thanked volunteers for their contributions to the community by hosting an annual Volunteer Appreciation Gala. The 2024 event held on May 2 in the South Stormont Municipal Hall in Long Sault, with its theme “Night at the Movies” serving as the backdrop for a celebration of the dedication and work done by community volunteers.
In a May 6 press release from the municipality, it was noted how there were “120 invited guests representing 16 community organizations, all of whom dedicate their time and energy to enhancing the lives of residents throughout the township.
“Tonight, we come together not only to celebrate but to recognize the heart and soul of our township – our volunteers,” said Mayor McGillis as the evening began. He continued how “Your commitment, compassion, and tireless service are what make South Stormont such a special place to call home. Whether you’re organizing community events, supporting youth programs, or lending a hand to those in need, you are the true stars of this evening, and we are deeply grateful.”
The evening featured a catered meal, an opportunity to socialize and dance as well as enjoying a speech from Tish Humphries, president of the Beyond 21 Foundation. “Humphries shared the impactful work being done by her organization, which supports adults with developmental disabilities across the region.” More information on Beyond 21 is available on their social media pages or their website located at https://beyond21.org.
As the evening concluded, it was announced that Dave Smith was the recipient of the 2024 Fran Laflamme Volunteer of the Year Award, with Tagwi Secondary Student Isabelle Paquette receiving the 2024 Youth Volunteer of the Year Award. Paquette has “contributed over 400 volunteer hours to organizations such as the Optimist Club, Children’s Treatment Centre, and the Roya Canadian Sea Cadets.”
Smith, who was unable to attend the event in person, sent a video message which was seen by those at the Gala with daughter Sara Andrews accepting the award for him. It was noted in the press release the recipient is “a well-known figure in South Stormont” who has supported the community for over 40 years by being the “driving force behind countless volunteer initiatives and not-for-profit groups.” In addition to being a small business owner, he has been a community builder, Smith has organized local sports, as well as “operating community events, or fundraising for community projects, he has been a constant contributor to the betterment of the Township of South Stormont.”
