WINCHESTER—The Winchester Hawks played a pair of weekend games as they travelled to Casselman on Thursday night to take on the Vikings and welcomed the Ottawa West Golden Knights on Friday night.

The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Ottawa West Golden Knights to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Sept. 27, in the CCHL2. The Hawks went into the game tied with the Golden Knights in second place in the Martin Division and had a chance to move into sole possession of first place with a victory. 

The Golden Knights opened the scoring at 17:04 of the first period and took a two-goal lead just 34 seconds later. The Golden Knights took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission. 

The Hawks got to within one, as Kyle Fleming scored his fourth goal of the season just 1:29 into the second period from Garrett Craig. The Hawks drew even at 15:10 as Bradley Wells scored his second of the season from Brady Meldrum off a two-on-one break while shorthanded. The Hawks took their first lead of the game when Marco, the former Golden Knights’ player scored his second of the season from Kyle Kuehni at 17:55. The Hawks looked good taking a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. 

The Hawks looked keep the momentum rolling in their favour but it was the Golden Knights who came out of the dressing room scoring at 3:14 of the third period tying the game at three. 

Neither team was able to score the game winner before regulation time expired. The game headed to a five-minute three-on-three overtime period. Each team had three shots on goal in the overtime but again, neither team found the back of the net so the game headed to a shootout. 

The Golden Knights scored on their first attempt and the Hawks’ Connor Harty was turned away. The Golden Knights’ second shooter also scored and again, the Hawks’ shooter, Danny Johnson missed. The Golden Knights ended up taking the game 4-3 winning the shootout 2-0. 

The Golden Knights outshot the Hawks 60-45. Suffering the loss in the Hawks’ goal was Lucas Devries making 42 saves on 45 shots.
