CHESTERVILLE—In the first round of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League’s round-robin playoffs, Blue welcomed Green in the night opener on Thursday night and Red played the hosts to Yellow in the late game.

Blue 5 Green 1

In the first game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League round robin playoff on Thurs., Aug. 1, Blue played host to Green at the Chesterville Arena. Blue went into the game with the number one seed after finishing first in the regular season and Green sat in the number four seed as they finished in fourth place. 

Blue opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the first period as Laura Rushford slapped one home from Lindsay Cummins taking a 1-0 lead. Blue made it 2-0 when Kara Bartholomew pounded one to the back of the net from Cummins at 2:05 and took a three-goal lead at 7:13 as the two combined again Bartholomew from Cummins. 

Blue continued to press Green’s defence and took a four-goal lead when Rushford scored her second of the game from Bartholomew at 17:36. Green cut the deficit to three when Jackie Morris slammed one home from Heather Erwin with just 1:28 remaining in the opening frame. Blue took the 4-1 lead into the second period. 

Blue retook a four-goal lead again when Bartholomew completed her hat trick just 47 seconds into the second period from Leigh Ann Dearing and Rebecca Kennedy. Neither team was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the middle frame, as Blue took a 5-1 lead into the third period. 

Green was able to hold Blue off the scoreboard in the third period but could not find the back of the net. Blue hung on to take the first game of the round robin 5-1. Picking up the win in Blue’s goal was Cashelle Baldwin (spare) and suffering the loss in Green’s goal was Roxanne Crump.

Red 3 Yellow 1

In the second game of the night in the Chesterville Women’s ball Hockey League’s round robin playoffs, Red welcomed Yellow. Red went into the game with the number two seed after finishing just one point behind the first place Blue while Yellow finished in the third seed finishing three points ahead of Green. 

Red opened the scoring at 7:53 of the first period as Theresa Schoones slid one to the back of the net from Steph Dafoe taking a 1-0 lead. Red made it a 2-0 game when Dafoe snapped one home from Jessica Rutley at 14:16. 

As the clock was winding down, Red took a three-goal lead when Stephanie Shane smacked one home from Sam Naish with just 23 seconds showing on the clock. Red took a 3-0 lead into the second period. 

Yellow cut the deficit to two when Alex Roach sniped one from Rebecca Alves and Cinnamon Boulanger at 7:55. Yellow pressed to get to within one but Red’s defence and goalie Cashelle Baldwin were able to hold their offence off the score sheet for the remainder of the middle frame. Red took a 3-1 lead into the third period. 

Yellow continued to press to close the gap, as the short-benched Red squad were tiring but they were able to hold Yellow at bay. Red took the game 3-1 tying Blue at one game each in the round robin. Picking up the win in Red’s goal was Baldwin and suffering the loss in Yellow’s goal was Terri Smith.
