COBDEN — The Winchester Hawks played two games this past weekend as they welcomed the first place Ottawa Jr. Canadians on Friday night and travelled to Cobden on Saturday night to take on the Whitewater Kings.

Hawks 6 Kings 5 (OT)

The Winchester Hawks travelled to the Cobden Arena on Sat., Nov. 10, to take on the Whitewater Kings in the CCHL2. The Hawks were coming off a tilted 9-0 loss to the Ottawa Jr. Canadians and fell three points behind the Embrun Panthers in sixth place in the Martin Division.

The Kings only had three wins in the season and sat in the basement of the Richardson Division.

The Kings opened the scoring just 1:28 into the first period on the power play taking a 1-0 lead. The Hawks tied the game when Kyle Kuehni scored his eighth goal of the season at 2:10 from Graeme Buffone and Miguel Pare.

The Kings retook the lead at 10:16 but the Hawks knotted the affair at 14:08 when Buffone scored his first goal of the season from Danny Johnson and Pare. The teams took a two-all draw into the first intermission.

The Hawks took their first lead of the game when Pare scored his sixth of the season from Johnson and Kuehni at 5:34 of the second period.

The Kings kept pace tying the game at 12:08 but Pare scored his second of the game and sixth of the season unassisted to give the Hawks their second lead. The Hawks took a 4-3 lead into the second intermission.

The Hawks took a two goal lead when Hunter Randell scored his fifth of the season from Cam Cotnam and William MacDonald at 5:09 of the third period. The Kings got to within one at 7:32. The Kings pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker and it paid off, scoring with just 27 seconds remaining in regulation.

Neither team was able to score before the final buzzer sounded. The game headed to a five-minute three-on-three overtime period. In the extra frame, the Hawks’ Pare completed his hat trick just 56 seconds in, from Kuehni and Isaac Kelly.

The Hawks took the game 6-5 picking up their fifth win of the season. With the win, the Hawks moved to within one point of the Panthers with three games in hand. Picking up the win in the Hawks’ goal was Darien Johnson making 36 saves on 41 shots.

Canadians 9 Hawks 0

The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Ottawa Jr. Canadians to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Nov. 9, in the CCHL2. Despite winning two games the previous weekend, the Hawks had fallen back into seventh place and they looked to keep pace with the Embrun Panthers for sixth place in the Martin Division.

The Canadians opened the scoring just 1:59 into the first period on the power play taking a 1-0 lead. The Canadians added to their lead with three more first-period goals at 3:39, 3:47 and 4:23 and took a 4-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Canadians dominated the second period as well scoring four more unanswered goals at 1:38, 7:13, 10:43 on the power play and 13:37 also on the power play. The Canadians took an 8-0 lead into the second intermission.

The Canadians scored the lone goal of the third period at 6:51 taking the game 9-0. The Canadians outshot the Hawks 60-14. Suffering the loss in the Hawks’ goal was Brent Pledge Dickson making just four saves on eight shots and was replaced by Darien Johnson at 4:23 of the first period and he made 47 saves on 52 shots.
