RENFREW—The Casselman Vikings played two games this past weekend as they welcomed the Char-Lan Rebels on Thursday night and travelled to Renfrew on Friday night to take on the Timberwolves.
Vikings 6 Timberwolves 1: The Casselman Vikings travelled to the Ma-te-Way Recreation Centre in Renfrew to take on the Timberwolves on Fri., Oct. 5, in the CCHL2. The Vikings (4-3) were coming off a surprise loss to the Char-Lan Rebels the previous night and looked to get those two points back.
The Vikings opened the scoring at 9:09 into the first period as Joel Hunt scored his fifth of the season from Shawn Patterson to take a 1-0 lead. Hunt scored his second goal of the game at 13:43 from Gabriel Rousselle on the power play to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
The Vikings outshot the Timberwolves 18-11 and took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The Timberwolves cut the deficit in half at 4:48 into the second period but the Vikings restored their two-goal lead when Jason Cossette scored his fourth goal of the season on the power play at 7:54 from Pierce Britton and Kyle Green.
The Vikings made it 4-1 when Brady Cloutier blasted one home from Brandon Legare and Green at 11:06. The Vikings took a four-goal lead when Hunt completed his hat trick with 31 seconds remaining in the middle from from Louis Chabot and Peterson on the power play.
The Vikings took a 5-1 lead into the second intermission. The Vikings closed out the scoring when Samuel Mattie scored his seventh goal of the season from Britton and Cloutier while shorthanded at 16:03.
The Vikings took the game 6-1 avenging their loss the previous night, tying the Rebels in second place in the Martin Division. Picking up the win in the Vikings’ goal was Mathieu Chenier making 28 saves on 29 shots. The Vikings outshot the Timberwolves 49-29
Rebels 6 Vikings 3: The Casselman Vikings welcomed the Char-Lan Rebels to the J. R. Brisson Complex on Thurs., Oct. 4, in the CCHL2. The two teams went into the game tied for second place in the Martin Division with eight points apiece so the winner would take sole possession of the second seed.
The Rebels opened the scoring at 12:08 of the second period to take a 1-0 lead and made it 2-0 at 16:39. The shots on goal after the first period were 13 each but the Rebels took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Vikings got to within one when Yanick Dicaire roofed one over the Rebels’ goalie, Grant Craig at 6:14 of the second period. The Vikings tied the game at the 13-minute mark as Mathieu Talbot pounded home a rebound scoring his first goal of the season from Evan Boucher and Etienne Aguis-Pease.
The Vikings took their first lead of the game when Brandon Legare scored on a partial breakaway at 14:17 from Brady Cloutier. It looked like the Vikings would carry the momentum into the third period but with just 42 seconds remaining in the middle frame the Rebels tied the game at three.
The teams took a three-all stalemate into the second intermission despite the Vikings outshooting the Rebels 14-8. The Rebels retook the lead at 13:42 of the third period and took a 5-3 lead at 17:11. The Vikings pulled their goalie, Nick Campbell with just under two minutes showing on the clock but the Rebels were able to score in the abandoned cage with just 30 seconds remaining and took the game 6-3.
With the win, the Rebels took sole possession of second place with a 4-1-1 record and sat six points behind the first place Ottawa Jr. Canadians. The Vikings dropped to 4-3 on the season with eight points.
Suffering the loss on the Vikings goal was Campbell making 24 saves on 29 shots.
Up next: The Casselman Vikings welcome the Winchester Hawks to the J. R. Brisson Complex on Thurs., Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. and travel to Arnprior on Fri., Oct. 12, to take on the Packers at 8 p.m. The Vikings then welcome the Ottawa West Golden Knights on Sun., Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m.
