CHESTERVILLE — Blue and Red took the lead in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League in week one of the round robin and faced off against each other in the first game of the night on Thurs., Aug. 2. Yellow welcomed Green in the second game in their quests for the championship.

Blue 4 Red 1: In the first game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League’s second round of the playoffs on Thurs., Aug. 2, at the Chesterville Arena Blue played host to Red. Both Red and Blue won their first games of the round robin format the previous week so it was a battle for the top seed heading into the final leg.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first period but Blue opened the scoring at 6:10 when Rebecca Kennedy slapped one home from Jaclyn Crump and Leigh Ann Dearing to make it 1-0.

Blue opened up a two-goal spread when Sam Benoit redirected one home from Lindsay Cummins and Carly Crump at 10:10. Blue took the 2-0 lead into the third period. Blue made it 3-0 as Cummins slid one to the back of the net from Jaclyn Crump and Carly Crump at 5:40 of the third period.

Red cut the deficit to two when Lindsay Feeley snapped one home from Katie Curry and Jessica Rutley at 7:28 to make it 3-1. Blue spoiled Red’s attempted comeback by scoring their fourth goal of the game as Benoit swatted one to the back of the net for her second goal of the game from Kennedy and Jaclyn Crump at 10:41.

Blue hung on for the 4-1 victory taking over sole possession of first place in the round robin with a pair of victories. Picking up the win in Blue’s goal was Roxanne Crump and suffering the loss in Red’s goal was Julia Shaver.

Yellow 4 Green 3: In the second game of the night in the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League, Yellow played host to Green. Both teams dropped their playoff opener but with a win either team could move into a second-place tie with Red.

Yellow got the ball rolling when Shannon McRae pounded one home from Jessica Winters and Laura Melenhorst at 3:18 into the first period. Green promptly tied the game at 4:28 as Karen Edwards sniped one from Selena Shane and Marissa Imrie.

Yellow retook the lead when Alex Roach blasted one home from Winters and Alannah McRae at 12:25 and with just three seconds remaining in the opening frame, Yellow made it 3-1 as Winters fired one home from Michelle Lang and took that lead into the second period.

Green got to within one when Edwards scored her second of the game from Catia Dias just 3:59 into the second period. Neither team was able to score before the end of the middle frame as Yellow took a slim 3-2 lead into the third period.

Green tied the game at 3:29 of the third period as Edwards completed her hat trick from Erin Cochrane and Patti Hall. Yellow retook the lead when Roach scored her second of the game at 8:29 from Winters to make it 4-3.

Green pressed to tie the game again but fell just a little short as Yellow took the game 4-3. With the win, Yellow moved into a two-way tie with Red heading into the final game of the round robin.

Picking up the win in Yellow’s goal was Patti Mitton and suffering the loss in Green’s goal was Cashelle Baldwin.

Up next: In the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League’s final of the round robin, Red welcomes Green on Thurs., Aug. 9, in the opening game at 7 p.m. and in the second game Blue plays host to Yellow at 8 p.m.
