“We are the champions”
The Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers travelled to the Lamoureux Ball Park in Cornwall on the weekend of July 27-29, for the Upper Canada Little League Championship Tournament. After dropping their first game, the Pioneers came all the way back to win the championship over the home team Cornwall Red in dramatic fashion. CORNWALL — The Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers travelled to Cornwall on the weekend of July 27-29 for the Upper Canada Little League Championship. The Pioneers finished the season in second place in the league and lost their tournament opener on Saturday. The Pioneers mounted a comeback making it all the way to the championship game.
Pioneers 3 Cornwall Red 2: The Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers were playing in their fourth game of the day and sixth of the tournament but this game was for all the marbles as they took the only team that had beaten them on route to the championship for the Upper Canada Little League on Sun., July 29, in Cornwall.
Since Cornwall took their first game 9-5, the Pioneers won five straight and were ready for the tough Cornwall squad. It was a defensive battle in the first two innings as neither team was able score a run. Cornwall took the lead after scoring a single in the top of the third inning to which the Pioneers could not answer.
The Pioneers’ defence began the top of the fourth inning on fire throwing two out and a strike out to hold Cornwall off the board. The Pioneers were unable to take advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
Cornwall made it 2-0 with a single in the top of the fifth inning but the Pioneers finally broke the ice scoring a single of their own in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 2-1 game. Emytt Fetterly struck two out and didn’t allow a run in the top of the sixth inning.
Cornwall was just three outs away from winning the championship and struck out the first Pioneer batter in the bottom of the sixth inning. With just two outs to go, a Cornwall pitcher walked the second batter, Nolan Henry.
Henry stole two bases and the Cornwall pitcher started an argument with the umpire and he was tossed from the game. During his departure a little skirmish happened in the stands which delayed the game a little.
After replacing the pitcher, Henry scored on a steal from third base tying the game at two. Next up was Kayne McCadden who hit a double and stole third base before Dean Lapier spanked one into the right field scoring McCadden from third.
As McCadden crossed the plate the team jumped with jubilation as they snuck one out taking the game 3-2 winning the 2018 Upper Canada Little League.
Scoring for the Pioneers were Mclean Machan, Henry and McCadden. Pitching for the Pioneers were Fetterly in the first and sixth, Lapier in the second and third and McCadden in the fourth and fifth.
Pioneers 14 Cornwall Purple 11: The Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers took on Cornwall Purple in their fifth game of the Upper Canada Little League Championship tournament on Sun., July 29. The Pioneers just finished off the Brockville Blue Jays 9-1 and with a win they would move on to the championship game.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after scoring a single in the top of the first inning but Cornwall answered with the maximum five runs taking a 5-1 lead into the second inning. The Pioneers’ bats heated up scoring five runs in the top of the second inning but Cornwall tied the game at six with a single in the bottom half of the inning.
The Pioneers answered with five more runs in the top of the third inning and held Cornwall off the board taking an 11-6 lead. The Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning but Cornwall scored three in the bottom of the inning making it a 12-9 ball game.
The Pioneers added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning and their defence held Cornwall at bay in the bottom of the fifth.
The Pioneers failed to score for the first time in the game in the top of the sixth inning and Cornwall took advantage scoring two runs but it wasn’t enough as the Pioneers took down Cornwall with a 14-11 victory. With the win, the Pioneers advanced to the championship game.
Scoring for the Pioneers were Nolan Henry with three, Kayne McCadden, Dean Lapier, Raiden Foote and Olivia Mudde all scored twice and Ryan Brodeur, Emytt Fetterly and Mclean Machan.
Pitching for the Pioneers were Brayden Barrie in the first inning, Lapier in the second and third, McCadden in the fourth and fifth and Fetterly closing out the deal.
Pioneers 9 Blue Jays 1: In their fourth game of the Upper Canada Little League Championship tournament, the Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers took on the Brockville Blue Jays, the second game of the morning on Sun., July 29. The Pioneers won their first game of the morning beating Cornwall Blue and their second win of the tournament.
The Pioneers needed a win in the double knock out format after dropping a previous game. The Pioneers scored a single in the first inning, five in the second, three singles in the third, fourth and fifth innings taking a 9-0 lead.
The Blue Jays finally got on the score sheet in the bottom of the fifth with a single. The Pioneers won their third game of the tournament as they moved on, eliminating the Blue Jays by a score of 9-1.
Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Kayne McCadden with three, Raiden Foote with a pair and Nolan Henry, Emytt Fetterly, Brayden Barrie and Olivia Mudde with singles.
Pitching for the Pioneers were Barrie in the first, Dean Lapier in the second and third and Kayne McCadden in the fourth and fifth.
Pioneers 10 Cornwall Blue 2: The Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers travelled to Cornwall for their third game in the Upper Canada Little League Championship on Sun., July 29. The Pioneers were coming off a big 17-0 win over the Kemptville Blue Wildcats but suffered a loss to Cornwall Red in their first game so a loss would end their championship run.
The Pioneers got on the score sheet first scoring a single in the top of the first inning but Cornwall tied the game after scoring a run in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers’ bats came to life scoring the maximum five runs allowed taking a 6-1 lead.
Cornwall had no answer in the bottom of the second. The Pioneers scored a single in the top of the third and three more in the top of the fourth to which Cornwall could not match to make it a 10-1 game.
The Pioneers were shot down in the top of the fifth inning but Cornwall could not take advantage. Cornwall scored a single in the bottom of the sixth inning but it wasn’t near enough as the Pioneers took the game 10-2.
Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Nolan Henry with three, Emytt Fetterly with two and Kayne McCadden, Brendan Shaver, Mclean Machan, Raiden Irvine and Olivia Mudde.
Pitching for the Pioneers were Brayden Barrie in the first, Dean Lapier in the second and third, McCadden in the third and fourth and Fetterly in the sixth.
Pioneers 17 Wildcats 0: In their second game of the Upper Canada Little League Championship Tournament, the Pioneers took on the Kemptville Blue Wildcats on Sat., July 28. The Pioneers’ bats came alive in the top of the first inning scoring the maximum five runs taking a 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats didn’t get off to a good start only getting four batters to the plate in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the top of the second and again shut the door in the bottom of the second.
The Pioneers added another five runs in the top of the third inning and again, the Wildcats had no answers. The Pioneers took a 12-0 lead into the fourth inning and added another five runs to which the Wildcats were unable to overcome as the Pioneers shutout the Wildcats 17-0.
Scoring the runs for the Pioneers were Kayne McCadden and Dean Lapier scoring three each, Nolan Henry, Brendan Shaver, Ryan Brodeur and Mclean Machan each scored a pair and Brayden Barrie, Raiden Foote and Olivia Mudde all scored singles.
Pitching for the Pioneers were Barrie in the first inning, Lapier in the second and third and McCadden finished the game.
Cornwall Red 9 Pioneers 5: The Williamsburg Junior Senior Pioneers travelled to Cornwall for the Upper Canada Little League Championship Tournament on the weekend of July 27-29. The Pioneers took on Cornwall #3 in their first game of the tournament in a double knock out format tournament on Sat., July 28. (Meaning if you lose any two games you were eliminated from further play ending their season.)
The Pioneers went three up and three down to open the tournament in top of the first inning. Cornwall scored three runs in their first at bat taking a 3-0 lead into the second inning. The Pioneers got one back in the top of the second inning but that was matched by Cornwall in the bottom of the second and took a 4-1 lead into the third inning.
Neither team was able to score in the third inning but the Pioneers got to within two runs after scoring a single in the top of the fourth. Cornwall scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth taking a 7-2 lead.
The Pioneers had their best inning scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 7-5 but Cornwall ended the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth taking the game 9-5. With the loss, the Pioneers could ill afford to lose a second game.
Scoring for the Pioneers were Dean Lapier and Mclean Machan with two runs each and Kayne McCadden scored a single.
