The Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League opened their playoffs on Thurs., July 26, at the Chesterville Arena with Blue welcoming Green. CHESTERVILLE — The Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League opened their playoffs on Thurs., July 26, with a pair of games featuring Blue against Green in the first game and Red versus Yellow in the late game.
Blue 4 Green 1: In the opening game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League’s playoff round robin, first place Blue welcomed fourth place Green on Thurs., July 26, at the Chesterville Arena. The two teams battled to a scoreless first period and most of the second period.
Blue opened the scoring when Sam Benoit swatted one out of the air to the back of the net from Jaclyn Crump and Carly Crump with just 1:33 remaining in the middle frame. Blue made it 2-0 with just 16 seconds left in the second as Benoit scored her second goal of the game from Jaclyn Crump and Carly Crump. Blue took a 2-0 lead into the third period.
Blue continued to press and at 2:59 of the third period Carly Crump slapped one home from Benoit and Leigh Ann Dearing to make it 3-0. Blue made it 4-0 when Carly Crump redirected one to the back of the net from Benoit and Jaclyn Crump at 5:39.
Green was able to get one back at 7:52 as Erin Cochrane blasted one to the back of the net from Marissa Imrie to make it 4-1. Green struggled to get close to Blue’s goalie as Blue hung on to take the game 4-1.
Picking up the win in Blue’s goal was Roxanne Crump and suffering the loss was Cashelle Baldwin.
Red 3 Yellow 1: In the second game of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League’s playoffs, second place Red played host to third place Yellow. With a win by either team they would tie Blue at the top of the round-robin standings.
Red opened the scoring as Jessica Rutley pounded one home from Lesley Ann Tupper and Emma Grady at 15:45 of the first period taking a 1-0 lead. Red took the 1-0 lead into the second period. Red made it 2-0 when Lindsay Feeley snapped one to the back of the net from Kaila Beckstead and Tupper at 9:32 of the second period.
Yellow cut the deficit in half as Alex Roach fired one home from Laura Melenhorst and Michelle Lang with just 35 seconds remaining in the middle frame. Red took a 2-1 lead into the final stanza. The teams battled to a scoreless third period until Red scored with just 1:45 remaining as Beckstead slid one home from Kim Elliott and Tupper and took the game 3-1.
Picking up the win in Red’s goal was Julia Shaver and suffering the loss in Yellow’s goal was Patti Mitton. With the win, Red and Blue shared the lead in the round robin with two points each.
Up next: In the second round of the Chesterville Women’s Ball Hockey League, Blue plays host to Red on Thurs., Aug. 2, at 7 p.m. and Yellow welcomes Green in the second game at 8 p.m.
