SOUTH DUNDAS – Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate following reports of an armed individual in the Municipality of South Dundas.
On Sun., July 13, 2025, at approximately 4:30 a.m., members of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SD&G) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and other specialty units were dispatched to a report of an armed individual near Lakeshore Drive and Augusta Street in Morrisburg.
Upon arrival, officers located a male with firearms. During the interaction between the police and the individual, police discharged a less-lethal device. The individual was taken into custody and transported to hospital.
During the investigation, police asked the public to shelter in place or to avoid the area for about two hours while they responded to the incident. Although the investigation remains ongoing, the shelter-in-place order has been lifted.
At approximately 5:40 a.m. the author of this article by chance happened upon the investigation and remained in the area until approximately 7:29 a.m. when Lakeshore Drive was reopened to traffic. At the height of the investigation approximately 20 police vehicles were on scene, primarily OPP, but at least one RCMP SUV was observed in the area.
As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information. An inquiry to the SIU into when an update would be released was sent Sunday evening, and an update was received a short time later.
At this point the SIU is investigating after two (2) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers discharged Anti-Riot Weapon ENfields (ARWENs) at a 42-year-old man in Morrisburg on the morning of July 13.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
- OnJuly 13, 2025, at about 5:13 a.m., police received a call about a man who had a gun on Augusta Street.
- Officers located the man and attempted to negotiate. A conducted energy weapon was discharged.
- There was an interaction, and two officers discharged ARWENs.
- A police service dog was used, and the man was handcuffed.
- The man was taken to hospital by ambulance where he was diagnosed with a non-life-threatening serious injury.
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
The SIU’s mandate was invoked because a police officer discharged an ARWEN, which is classified as a firearm. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, a firearm is defined as a barreled weapon from which any shot, bullet or other projectile can be discharged and that is capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to a person.
