With a little more time available to them, some of the older students at Elementaire catholique Notre Dame du Rosaire in Crysler left the village behind and headed out on the municipal trail before returning to class. Tinkess Photo

CRYSLER – Bicycle rodeos were quite popular a few years ago, but then interest seemed to die off a bit, but now they seem to be making a return, most recently at Elementaire catholique Notre Dame du Rosaire in Crysler.

The weather on Thurs., June 12 couldn’t have been more perfect; clear blue skies and a gentle breeze. There are approximately 150 children at the school in kindergarten through to grade six and they were broken into three separate groups. Grades 4, 5, and 6 were on their bikes from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., Kindergarten from 10:15 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and grades 1, 2, and 3 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Departing from the school, wearing helmets and obeying the rules of the road, the young people accompanied by teachers and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Service Officer, travelled through the community, enjoying some fresh air, a bit of exercise and a chance to do something just a little bit different than they would expect during a normal school day.

The older children obviously travelled a bit farther, venturing west then south along the municipal trail before turning around and heading back to school. Judging by the number of smiles seen, it was an event that was enjoyed at least as much by the staff as by the students.

An email notifying The Record of the event stated that this was the first year for the event, but the positive response should help ensure it becomes a regular event. Special thanks to Parent Council member Renee Robinson and Phys Ed teacher Mr. Mathieu for making great use of a beautiful June day and allowing us the opportunity to help capture it!
