Terry Tinkess Photography – More than just an image

Like any artistic endeavour, photography is one of the arts that challenges an artist to capture more than just an image, but also feelings and emotions.

The expression, “a picture is worth a thousand words” is not at all misplaced when it comes to photography.

Terry Tinkess Photography in Ingleside captures the idea of recording your special moments in a way that speaks to you.

“We do just about anything. We do corporate headshots, group photographs, weddings, and engagements,” said Tinkess.

Being an animal lover living with two cats and a dog means that Terry enjoys taking photos of animals.

“I probably have far too many photos of them.”

Terry has been fortunate to have had several interesting careers including being a professional photographer for the past 17 years, and before that a policeman for 20 years in Cornwall.

“I have always had an interest in photography since I was a teenager.”

The thread running through his life has been education, journalism, and of course photography. After he retired from the police force, he resumed his education at Carleton University in Ottawa.

The photographic profession has changed dramatically over the past 20 years; from film and film processing to the arrival of a digital photographic platform for just about everything, along with software needed to take the profession from where it was in the 19th century to where it is today.

The ability to take photographs has become a standard skill these days but to execute it properly and creatively, it still requires a special talent.

Terry said: “You have to evolve along with it. You have to at the very least understand the changes or you will get left behind. You do not have to necessarily adopt everything, but you have to be aware of it.”

He said he still likes to have some control over how he takes his photographs, and that new technology does have its place.

His website mentions some of his photographic accomplishments.

“I have been a member of Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) for almost ten years and am accredited in Fine Art/Photo Décor. I am also a Certified Professional Photographer with the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).”

He is a graduate of the Carleton University Journalism program, and holds a Master’s degree in Canadian Studies, also from Carleton.

“I have been teaching photography courses at St. Lawrence College since 2007.”

Terry is driven to try and create something of every photo opportunity.

He remembers while getting his journalism degree he was taking part in a workshop about photography.

“That’s where I really got the bug for photography. I really liked the feel of the camera in my hand, and I like the idea of being able to capture the moment the way I saw it. I started writing freelance.”

He also enjoys being able to offer photographic restoration.

“I like taking a photo especially if it is a damaged photo and bring it back to its original beauty.”

He likes to develop relationships with people he works with.

“I like the idea of creating the something that is different, that is created by me, not by the box in my hand.”

This past April he had one of his photographs selected for an exhibition celebrating the best of Canadian professional photography.

A press release detailing the exhibition events stated: “A panel of master photographers judged the best works submitted by professional photographers from across Canada and accepted a selection of outstanding images for exhibition as the 2022 National Image Salon of the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC).”

Terry works out of his studio in Ingleside. He lives with his wife Brenda and their dog Mia and cats Chubbers and Wally.
