WINCHESTER — The Township of North Dundas and mayor, Eric Duncan hosted the fifth and final edition of Meet Me on Main Street at the Joel Steele Community Centre on Wed., Aug. 1. Meet Me on Main Street was an idea the township came up with to celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017 but due to its popularity it became a hit for the second year.

The event was supposed to be held at the corner of Main St. and St. Lawrence St. but had to be moved to the arena due to the threat of rain. The first of the series was in Morewood on July 4, the second was in South Mountain on July 11, the third in Hallville on July 18, the fourth in Chesterville on July 25 and finally in Winchester on Wed., Aug. 1.

The celebrations featured local entertainment, craft breweries from the area, local restaurants and food vendors along with booths from the North Dundas Fire Departments, Southgate Church and SD&G Library.

The Winchester event featured Beaus Brewery from Vankleek Hill and Tuque de Broue from Embrun. Serving up delicious eats were Winchelsea Events, Milano Pizzeria, Mr. Mozzarella, Triple B and Simply Baked for desserts all from Winchester.

Southgate Church offered up free popcorn and a big bouncy castle for the kids, SD&G Library was on hand with games, books and multimedia platforms, and the North Dundas Fire Department handed out free stuff.

There was also face painting, a balloon artist and games for children. The entertainment was provided by the band, the Brigadoons from Cornwall who belted out some toe tapping Celtic music. Duncan said there were more than 1,000 people who filed through the Joel Steel Community Centre to enjoy the celebration.

When asked by the Record if he was going to do it again next year, Duncan replied, “That will be up to the next mayor and council.” But he did say that if needed he would help out and wanted to thank the staff for all their hard work that went into planning and operations.

Overall, Duncan said there was more participation this year than last with all locations welcoming more people than last year with the exception of Morewood due to the heat and humidity.
